MSU adds Joe Lincoln as volunteer assistant, promotes Derek Mattea to director of operations post
After spending the 2014 season as Missouri State's graduate manager, former Bear Derek Mattea moves into the role of director of operations for his second year on the Bears' staff. The Collinsville, Ill., native will assist with the oversight of the day-to-day operations for the Bears' program, including coordinating equipment and travel needs.
Mattea started his coaching career after a successful two-year playing stint at MSU from 2010-12. He hit .266 in 79 games over his two-year MSU tenure, helping the Bears to their eighth NCAA Regional berth in 2012. Mattea joined the Bears after a two-year stint at John A. Logan College, where he led the Volunteers to top 15 national rankings both years.
Mattea returned to the Bears last fall after gaining valuable experience as an assistant coach at both Logan College and Ziegler-Royalton High School during the 2012-13 academic year. He also served as head coach of the Southern Illinois Bullets, a 17U traveling team, guiding his club to a 17-9 overall record and four tournament titles in 2013. This past summer Mattea assisted the Forest City Owls of the Coastal Plain League as a hitting instructor.
