2013: Murphy sat out the season as a medical redshirt...Named to the MVC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll.
2012: Recorded a breakthrough junior campaign in which he went 5-1 with a 1.37 earned run average over 10 appearances (eight starts) before an elbow injury shortened his season in early April...Fell just 3.0 innings pitched short of reaching the national statistical minimum, which would have resulted in him finishing second (to teammate Nick Petree) in all of Division I in ERA...Allowed just nine earned runs over 59.0 innings...Posted career highs in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts despite missing the final two months of the season...Went 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA and a complete game in his only two MVC appearances...Notched his first career save Feb. 24, vs. Stephen F. Austin, working the final 2.2 innings of an 8-3 victory without allowing a hit...Limited Oklahoma State to one run (none earned) on seven hits over 6.2 innings (Feb. 29) to post his first win of the season, a 7-1 MSU victory...Would not allow an earned run until his fifth appearance of the season, a 5-2 win over Oklahoma State (March 6), in which he turned in his first career complete game and extended his streak of consecutive innings vs. Big 12 competition without allowing an earned run to 26.0 innings...Named Coors Missouri State Player of the Week (March 12)...Picked up third win with 7.2 IP in a 3-2 win over ORU (March 18) in which he fanned a season-high 10 batters while giving up just two hits...Tossed 7.0 innings in the Bears' 5-3 win over Creighton (March 25), allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out seven to earn his fourth victory of the season...Pitched his second complete game as a Bear April 7 at Bradley, allowing just two unearned runs on 10 hits over 8.0 innings of a 12-2 MSU victory...Sustained season-ending tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching (right) elbow in the win at Bradley and underwent successful Tommy John surgery April 27.
2011: Appeared in 18 games and started five, going 3-3 with 44 strikeouts in 44.2 innings while lowering his ERA to 5.64 after a slow start...Had a 4.14 ERA after February...Named MVC Pitcher of the Week May 22 after shutting out No. 22 Oklahoma State for eight innings with 10 strikeouts against three hits...Beat Oklahoma State on March 1 after yielding a run in five innings...Earned a win in consecutive outings by throwing two innings with one hit against SEMO (March 16) and surrendering a run in four innings with five strikeouts versus Western Illinois (March 19)...Struck out seven in 5.1 innings against Creighton in the MVC Tournament (May 26)...Played for the Wilson Tobs in the Coastal Plain League in the summer, starting nine of his 10 outings and throwing 59 innings with a 2.75 ERAm 64 strikeouts, 21 walks and a .207 opponent average.
2010: Pitched 47.2 innings over 15 appearances and three starts, leading all members of the staff to throw at least six innings with a 3.21 ERA...Went three innings without an earned run in first career start at SEMO (March 10)...Struck out 11 over seven innings April 7 against Oklahoma State...Named MVC Pitcher of the Week on April 26, going 2-0 with 0.00 ERA in nine innings in relief wins against SIUE and Creighton...Pitched 11.2 consecutive scoreless innings from March 17-24...Posted a 4-2 record with 43 strikeouts...Allowed a single hit in five of 15 outings...Yielded a run over 6.2 innings against Arkansas State...Struck out eight in six innings for a victory over Central Arkansas (March 24)...Had a 3.98 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 61 innings for the Glen Falls Golden Eagles of the New York Collegiate League in the summer.
Background: Murphy was a four-year starter as a pitcher and infielder for Shawnee High in Wolf Lake, Ill., helping his Redskins to a combined record of 110-28-1 and conference tournament championships his final three seasons...Put up a sparkling 0.33 ERA, 11-1 record and 130 strikeouts in 85 innings as a senior on the way to a third consecutive conference MVP award and all-state honors...Also helped Shawnee High to its first sectional victory in 28 years while batting .397 with 32 RBIs in 25 games as a hitter...As a sophomore, Murphy was an honorable mention all-state choice after hitting .551 and finishing 10-2 with a 0.88 ERA, 139 strikeouts and a .135 opponent batting average on the mound...Repeated that all-state honor as a junior, going 10-3 with a 0.71 ERA, 86 Ks and a .129 opponent average in 49 innings while hitting .507 and leading his team to a second straight regional title...Batted .461 as a freshman and pitched to a 9-4 record and 1.84 ERA...Was also a four-year starter on the Redskins basketball team.
