SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- With the swimming & diving season now in full swing, Missouri State welcomes two in-state schools to the Hammons Student Center pool this weekend. The Bears will host Lindenwood on Friday at 5 p.m., followed by a dual meet with Truman State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Missouri State is 8-0 all-time against the Lindenwood Lions in men's and women's competition. As for Truman State, the MSU men are a perfect 23-0 when swimming against the Bulldogs, while the women are 6-9, but have won the past three meetings.
Both the MSU men and women are coming off of big victories over defending NCAA Division II national champions, Drury. The women squeaked out a 119-115 win over the Panthers, while the men recorded one its biggest wins over Drury in program history with a 169-74 victory.
"It's a good break for our swimmers , because we've been in the pressure cooker from the Show-Me Showdown, right through the Southern Illinois meet and Drury definitely was a pressure cooker," head coach Jack Steck said of the duals against Lindenwood and Truman State. "This is kind of what the doctor ordered and is a relief for our kids."
In addition to the wins, the Bears nabbed Swimmer of the Week awards in both the Missouri Valley and Mid-American Conference. On Tuesday, Anna Ahlin earned her first career weekly honor after breaking her own pool record in the 100-yard backstroke with her 57.91 lead-off split in the 400 medley relay and a victory in the 200 backstroke (2:04.25).
Missouri State freshman Vitalii Baryshok was named the male MAC Swimmer of the Week on Wednesday following the Bears' blowout win over the Panthers. Baryshok won both of his individual events including the 50 and 100 freestyle. He also recorded a 45.32 lead-off split in the 400 free relay that finished first and broke a five-year-old pool record.
The Bears will wrap up their five-meet homestand with the University of Missouri on Thursday, November 10 at 4 p.m.
