ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Missouri State sophomore Suzanne Van Rensburg has been named Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer of the Week, the league announced Tuesday (Oct. 23) in its weekly swimming & diving release. It is the second consecutive week that a Bear has garnered the MVC weekly honor. Last week, junior Anna Ahlin received the honor.
The Bears opened up their dual-meet schedule with stiff competition in a Missouri squad that finished the 2011-12 season rated No. 18 in the CollegeSwimming.com/CSCAA Coaches' Poll.
Sophomore Suzanne Van Rensburg was up for the challenge, winning the 1000 freestyle (10:31.83) in the first individual event of the afternoon. She then dropped five seconds from her previous season best in the 500 free (5:08.55) to finish in a close second to Tigers' sophomore Danielle Spradlin.
The Missouri State distance specialist currently has the second fastest 1000 free time in the MVC and is ranked third among conference swimmers in the 500 free.
This week, the Bears are gearing up for their dual with crosstown rival Drury on Friday, October 26. Diving will begin at 4:30 p.m., while swimming is set for a 6 p.m. start time.
