COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri State men's and women's swimming and diving teams open the 2013-14 season at the ninth annual Show-Me Showdown, hosted by Missouri at the Mizzou Aquatics Center Friday at 3 p.m.

The Bears will face the host Tigers as well as Drury, Lindenwood, Maryville, Missouri S&T, Truman State, Washington University and William Jewell at the meet. All teams besides Missouri S&T (men only) have both men's and women's programs.

Last season, the Missouri State men's team took second place while the women were third at the Show-Me Showdown to open the year. Paul Le and Vitalii Baryshok each claimed two individual titles apiece for the men and Renata Sander took one for the women. The men finished with 584 points and the women had 466.

Scoring Format
Individual Scoring: Each team may score their top-three finishers in each event. Top-16 places score.
Breakdown: 20-17-16-15-14-13-12-11-9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1

Relay Scoring: Each team can score only their top-two relays in each event. Top-16 places score.
Breakdown: 40-34-32-30-28-26-24-22 18-14-12-10-8-6-4-2

Number of Events: Each swimmer of diver may compete in a maximum of two individual events and two relays.


 

 

1-Meter Diving: Each team will do a diving scramble to try and score the largest point total. Each member on the team will do six dives covering all five groups with true degree of difficulty. The points from each diving group's highest scorer will count toward the team total score. The best score per diving group (front, back, reverse, inward, twist, 6th opt.) will count towards the total.

3-Meter Diving: Each diver will be required to do six dives from all five groups. No matter what first three dives the divers choose the degree of difficulty will be set at 2.0. The remaining three dives will be of true degree of difficulty.

Returning All-Conference Selections
Missouri State returns a trio of all-MAC performers in 2013-14 in Miguel Davila, Uvis Kalnins and Caleb Schuermannn, while second-team honorees Jack Snow, Matthew Wilson, Vitalii Baryshok and  Isaac Springer are also back for more.

Noting 2012-13

  • The Bears took second in the MAC championships last season with 766 points as Rastern Michigan claimed the title with 772. MSU won just one individual event and one relay on its way to a second-place finish.
  • Head coach Dave Collins was named MAC Coach of the Year in his first full season at helm of the program.
  • The Bears set six school records at the MAC championships, including in the 500 free (Kalnins, 4:23.28), 3-meter dive (Garett Navels, 378.6), 200 IM (Le, 1:45.76), 100 back (Le, 47.07), 200 back (Le, 1:42.44) and 800 free relay (Baryshok, Schuermann, Isaac McKnight and Kalnins, 6:31.23).
  • Le was named an honorable mention All-American by College Swimming Coaches Association of America, the first-ever honoree for the Bears. Le earned the recognition by finishing 15th overall in the 200 backstroke at the NCAA championships in Indianapolis in a time of 1:42.57.
  • Kalnins competed in the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, swimming the 100- and 200-meter freestyle.

Missouri State returns no fewer than 10 all-MVC first team selections this season in Anna Ahlin, Rebecca Amparano, Roni Balzam, Kate Gately, Megan Holthoff, Dora Kiss, Alyssa Powers, Renata Sander, Ibby Simcox and Heather Snyder. Also back are second-team selections Emily Chesser, Lindsey Conway, Janke Engelbrecht, Olivia Gean, Molden and  Suzanne Van Rensburg.


Noting 2012-13

  • Missouri State claimed its sixth consecutive Missouri Valley Confence swimming and diving championship in 2013 in Carbondale, Ill., with 897 points, topping second-place Illinois State by 121
  • The Bears won the title for the 10th time in the last 11 seasons and became the first school in league history to win for the sixth straight year.
  • MSU won 11 events in the championships
  • Collins was named MVC Co-Swimming Coach of the Year, sharing the award with Evansville's Rickey Perkins.
  • Sander, Kiss and UE's Michelle Tipton shared MVC Swimmer of the Year honors. Sander won the award for the second consecutive season.
