CLEVELAND, Ohio – A pair of Missouri State swimmers were recognized for their academic and athletic achievements on Wednesday (April 4) when the Mid-American Conference announced the 2012 Men’s Swimming & Diving Academic All-MAC Team, voted on by the faculty athletic representatives. Representing the Bears on the 18-man first team were junior Daan Jansen and sophomore Jared Roberts.
Roberts was one of five members from the All-MAC first team that received Academic All-MAC honors for their combined performances in and out of the water. Also accomplishing the impressive feat were Eastern Michigan’s Troy Esentan and Andrew Saunders and Southern Illinois’ Matt Parsons and Justin Wolfe.
Majoring in Human Resources Management, Jansen holds an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.59. It is the second time in as many years that the Polokwane, South Africa native has earned Academic All-MAC first team honors. In the fall, he made the Missouri State Athletics Director’s Honor Roll and was named MAC Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 9.
At the 2012 MAC Swimming & Diving Championships, Jansen placed top-16 in all three of his individual events. He swam a lifetime best in the 200 IM (1:51.15) while placing 12th in the event. His top performance at the meet came in the 400 IM timed final where he captured sixth place (3:57.71). On the final day, the junior wrapped up his third season with an 11th-place finish in the 1650 free (16:05.93).
Majoring in Accounting, Roberts has an overall GPA of 3.48. Like Jansen, the Wichita, Kan. native was named to the Missouri State Athletics Director’s Honor Roll in the fall. He was one of four Bears to achieve an individual NCAA “B” cut this season, getting his time in the 1650 freestyle. At Northwestern University’s TYR Invitational in November, Roberts won the mile and placed third in the 500 free.
The All-MAC first team selection set new Missouri State records in the 1000 and 1650 freestyle (15:16.67) with his gold-medal performance at the 2012 MAC Championships. As the defending champion in the event, Roberts established his pace from the get-go and held off teammate Caleb Schuermann to successfully defend his title. He also made it onto the podium in the 500 free (4:28.77) collecting a fourth-place finish.
In addition to Jansen and Roberts, senior Tyler Saltzberry and sophomore Jake Coleman were recognized on the Academic All-MAC honorable mention squad.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and participated in at least 50 percent of the contests. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the awards. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season are only considered.
