MVC Friday Prelims Results
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Missouri State swimming & diving team picked up where it left off and is primed to extend its lead at the 2012 State Farm MVC Swimming & Diving Championships in Carbondale, Ill.
The Bears opened the second day of action at Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium with the 400 IM, and Like Thursday's 200 IM, Missouri State showed its depth by qualifying all five swimmers for the championship finals heat. Senior captain Brianna Willoughby was MSU's fastest qualifier in second, followed by Suzanne Van Rensburg (t-4th), Kaylee Steffen (6th), Marta Nogueroles (7th) and Katie Lindeman (8th).
Heading into the Championships, freshman Roni Balzam held the fastest time in the MVC in the 100 fly and this morning was no different. The Ramat Yishay, Israel native will be the top seed and take her season-best time of 56.16 into the A-Final, along with senior Ali Stauffer.
For the second time on Friday, the Bears qualified all of their swimmers for the A-Final as Dimitra Drakpoulou, Hannah Molden, Dawn Richerson and Laura Peterson finished 5-8, respectively.
Missouri State record holder Renata Sander snagged the top spot in the 100 breast (1:04.62), while teammate Melissa Oishi also eased her way into the championship finals as she sits in fourth place with a 1:05.99.
In the final swimming event of the morning (100 back), the Bears claimed three of the top-five positions. Defending MVC champion Anna Ahlin earned the top seed (56.15), while Megan Holthoff is third and Janke Engelbrecht is fifth. Brynne Buell narrowly missed the championship finals by .22 seconds.
Sophomore Paige Koebbe had an impressive day on the 3-meter board making the championship finals for the first time in her career. Consolation divers will compete Friday night, while Koebbe and the other finalists will dive in the finals on Saturday evening.
The finals session is set to start at 6 p.m.
