Swimming & Diving Bears Take Aim at Seventh Straight MVC Title

Missouri State Bears at 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Championships
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Missouri State swimming & diving team opens the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Swimming & Diving Championships Thursday at Southern Illinois’ Shea Natatorium in search of its seventh consecutive league crown.
♦ The Bears become the first team in MVC history to capture six straight conference championships last February, winning for the 10th time in 11 seasons by a 121-point margin.
♦ Missouri State claimed nine individual event championships and two relay titles to close within three of the Salukis’ record 13 Valley championships.
♦ MSU placed 19 on the All-MVC teams, including 12 on the first team. Renata Sander and Dora Kiss shared Co-MVC Swimmer of the Year honors with Michelle Tipton of Evansville. Head Coach Dave Collins Coach of the Year honors, splitting the award with UE’s Rickey Perkins. Sander earned the top individual swimming honor for the second straight year.
♦ Missouri State enters the weekend with conference-leading times in seven events -- the 100 backstroke, 100 and 200 breaststroke, 100 and 200 butterfly and 400-medley relay. Senior Anna Ahlin has the top time of the year in the 100 back (54.83). Classmate Renata Sander leads in the 100 (1:02.10) and 200 (2:15.01) breaststrokes, while junior Roni Balzam has the fastest 100 fly (55.83). Sophomore Dora Kiss boasts the top 200 fly (2:01.44) and 400 IM (4:25.45) times. Ahlin, Sander, Balzam and junior Shannon Myer hold the best 400-medley relay mark (3:46.42).
