CLEVELAND, Ohio -- As a result of his record-breaking performance against 20th-ranked Nittany Lions, Missouri State diver Garrett Nevels has been named Mid-American Conference Athlete of the Week. Earning his first-ever weekly award, he is now the sixth Bear this season to receive the honor.
The sophomore from Lee's Summit, Mo. (Lee's Summit High) recorded the highest scores of his MSU career, while sweeping both springboard events in Fayetteville, Ark. on Saturday (Jan. 14). Nevels began his career day against No. 20 Penn State with a new school record on 1-meter. Scoring 357.60 points, he defeated Penn State's Lucas Kachurick by nearly 100 points. His mark surpasses previous record-holder Eric Ducourneau, who set the record in 2009 with a score of 352.65.
Nevels didn't miss a beat in the 3-meter diving competition. He wrapped up the meet with his second NCAA Zone 'D' qualifying cut of the season and another victory. The Bears' top diver totaled 351.70 points and won by a 30-point margin on 3-meter.
This year's NCAA Zone 'D' Diving Championships will take place in Houston, Texas (March 11-13), just a few days after the completion of the 2013 MAC Championships.
