INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Sophomore Paul Le kicked off the first day of competition at the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships with the 200 IM and finished 45th overall in the event.
“I thought it was a good swim to get under his belt, knowing that the primary events are coming tomorrow and Saturday,” head coach Dave Collins said. “I was pleased with it and now that we’ve got that warm-up swim out of our system, we’re ready to go for tomorrow.”
The two-time all-MAC first team selection jumped out to the fastest fly split (22.81) in Heat 4 and was second after the backstroke leg. He touched the wall at 1:46.64, which was good for fifth in the heat and 45th overall. Le's time was less than a second off of his school record (1:45.76) that he set in prelims at the MAC Championships earlier this month.
Of the 61 competitors in the 200 IM, only 19 [31 percent] swam faster than their original seed times.
“It’s fast swimming,” Collins added. “This is the highest level you can get in swimming with both international Olympians and U.S. Olympians here. It’s very loud. There’s a lot of energy. It’s just an exciting meet to be a part of.”
In all 51 teams are represented at the 2013 NCAA Championships held at the Indiana University Natatorium. Missouri State is one of 17 schools to have just one representative at the meet. On the other end of the spectrum, there are nine programs which qualified 10 or more individual swimmers. Leading the way was Michigan and California with 17 and 16, respectively.
On Friday, Le will compete in the 100-yard backstroke, an event in which he is seeded 31st overall. The top 16 finishers make it back to the championship finals, which start at 7 p.m. ET each night. Prelims for Friday are set for 11 a.m. ET.
