SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - On Friday, the Missouri State swimming & diving team rebounded from its down-to-the wire loss at Drury with a sweep of William Jewell at Hammons Student Center pool. The Bears took care of the Cardinals 130-49 on the women's side, while the men defeated William Jewell 121-67.
After a 20-year hiatus, William Jewell College reinstated its varsity swimming program this year as the Cardinals have found their home in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference. In its first season back, William Jewell fielded a team of five women and six men.
Friday's dual gave the Bears a chance to mix it up a bit and compete in some of their secondary events.
In women's action, Dawn Richerson, Brianna Willoughby, Marta Nogueroles, Anna Ahlin, Suzanne Van Rensburg, Brynne Buell, Roni Balzam, Megan Holthoff, Katie Brown and Renata Sander were among the MSU swimmers to win an individual event. Of that group, both Willoughby (50 free, 200 free) and Nogueroles (100 back, 200 back) secured two victories apiece.
The Bears also registered wins in the women's 200 medley and 200 free relays.
Missouri State's men grabbed first place in both relays and took home the top spot in each of the individual events except for the 200 back.
Winners in the men's competition included Jake Coleman (1000 free), Yuri Garanito (200 free), Vitalii Baryshok (100 back, 50 free), Paul Le (100 breast, 500 free), Chris Carpenter (200 fly), Daan Jansen (200 breast) and Caleb Schuermann (100 fly, 200 IM).
The Bears will conclude their three-day stretch of meets on Saturday with a quad meet at Lindenwood. The meet is set to start at 1 p.m. in St. Peters, Mo.
