At Missouri State: Nicolas Villarroel enters his senior year looking to cap off an impressive career for the men's squad. He is expected to lead the backstroke and butterfly groups and play an important role leading off the medley relay races...2008-09: Villarroel was one of the top backstrokers for the Bears earning the top time for the year in the 200-meter backstroke (1:48.00) and second in the 100-meter backstroke (48.06)...placed fifth in the Sun Belt Conference Championships in the 200-meter backstroke (1:48.00), also breaking a personal best time...2007-08: In his sophomore year, Villarroel had an outstanding first season as a Bear. He was a member of two conference championship teams, leading off both the 200 and 400 medley relays. Villarroel also set a new SBC record, winning the 100 backstroke with at time of 49.12. His time of 49.12 is second best in Missouri State history. Villarroel was awarded a three-time Sun Belt Medallion winner and was named to the Men's All-American Honorable Mention Team. 2006-07: Villarroel spent the majority of his freshman year developing into a backstroke specialist. He did not compete in any meets. Background: Villarroel joined Missouri State after representing Venezuela in international competitions. In 2005, he competed in the Central American Games and placed eighth in the 50 back. He competed in the Venezuela Nationals that same year and was the runner-up in the 50 back, finished fifth in the 100 back and third in the 200 fly. In 2006, Villarroel competed in the Venezuela Nationals for the second time and placed second in the 50 back, and third in the 100 back. Personal: Full name is Nicolas Villarroel. Born September 23, 1988, in Caracas, Miranda, Venezuela. Son of Nicolás and Olivia Villarroel. Nicolas' sister, Indira, is a former member of the Missouri State women's swimming and diving team.
