Background: Kalnins is a freestyle swimmer from Valmiera, Latvia, and swam for Valmieras BSS. As the top-ranked freestyler in Latvia, Kalnins was selected to represent the country in the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games where he competed in the 100-meter freestyle. He turned in a personal best in the event (49.96) and registered the second fastest time in the fourth heat. He finished 30th out of 56 participants and was less than a second off of the 16th-place finisher. In 2012, at the European Junior Championships, Kalnins placed third in the 100 free freestyle (50.18). He also recorded numerous life-time bests in 2011 including swims at the European Junior Championships, International Sprint Festival and the 87th Latvian Swimming Championships.
