Phalajivin Leads MVC Preview, Bears Tied for First After 18 Holes
Bears’ senior captain Amy Phalajivin leads the MVC Preview individually after the first 18 holes of play at Lake Panorama Golf Course in Panora, Iowa. The Missouri State women are tied with host team Drake for first place firing 323 as a team. The tournament started Monday, October 20 and consists of nine teams, seven Missouri Valley Conference schools. The event is a fall preview for the conference tournament which is scheduled to be played on the same par 72, 6,107-yard course in April 2009.
Phalajivin fired a one-over-par round of 73 in the first round of the 36-hole tournament. She leads the tournament individually by three strokes over last year’s conference medalist Olivia Lansing of Drake. Lansing shot 76, leading the Bulldogs.
Freshman Kelsey Welber and senior Mallory Mahon were second for the Bears. They are tied for 15th place individually with 18-hole scores of 83. Freshman Emily Potts is fourth for the Bears in her first collegiate tournament. She is one stroke behind teammates Mahon and Welber with an 84 and sits in a tie for 21st. Catherine Dolan, a freshman for the Bears, is in a tie for 35th place and shot an 85. Also for the Bears was senior Lindsey Wellenstein with an 18-hole score of 94. She is tied for 52nd going into the final 18 holes.
Bradley trails the Bears closely in third place, only one stroke behind with a team score of 324. Rounding out the top-five was Wichita State and Northern Iowa. The schools shot 327 and 330, respectively.
The final round of the MVC Preview is scheduled for Tuesday, October 21 with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
