SPRINGFIELD -– A number of special events and activities will highlight Missouri State's participation in the second annual College Colors Day national celebration, which takes place on Friday, Aug. 30.

College Colors Day is an annual celebration dedicated to promoting the traditions and spirit that embody the college experience by encouraging fans across America to wear their favorite university apparel throughout the day.

Local efforts will target College Colors Day as the biggest BearWear Friday of the year and will include BearWear discounts at the MSU Bookstore and JQH Arena Team Store, campus prize patrol giveaways, and even a citywide proclamation from Springfield mayor Bob Stephens. The Bookstore will offer a 20-percent discount on Aug. 30 to customers wearing BearWear. Various Missouri State Facebook pages, including the Athletics and Alumni pages, will also provide discount coupon codes to fans who post BearWear photos.

MSU is also asking for fan support in the national Spirit Cup Award competition, which includes $10,000 toward the general scholarship fund of the winning school. By visiting Facebook, Bears fans can show their allegiance to Missouri State. After voting, fans will have the opportunity to win prizes and discounts through an instant-win game and download a custom Facebook cover photo promoting Missouri State University for College Colors Day.

The Facebook competition includes more than 160 participating colleges and kicks off Monday, Aug. 12. The contest concludes on Thursday, Aug. 29.  Fans can vote once each day and can check national and conference leaders. The winner will be announced on College Colors Day.

The national spirit competition is presented by The Collegiate Licensing Company, a division of IMG College, and NCAA Football. CLC is the oldest and largest collegiate trademark licensing agency in the U.S. and currently represents nearly 200 colleges, universities and conferences. Its mission is to be the guiding force in collegiate trademark licensing and one of the top sports licensing firms in the country.

The Bears will kick off their 2013 season the day prior to College Colors Day with a 6 p.m. home game at Plaster Field against Northwestern (La.) State, on Thursday, Aug. 29.
