Kollen Casey came to SMS in 1977 as a top international gymnast from St. Paul, MInn., and in her two years at SMS she accumulated many gymnastic awards. Before coming to SMS, Casey was a member of the winning U.S. team at the 1975 Pan American Games in Mexico City, Mexico, placing first in vaulting, second on the balance beam and third in all-around competition. The following year, she was a member of the U.S. team in the Montreal Summer Olympics. At SMS, Casey finished first in vaulting, third in floor exercise and second in all-around competition at the AIAW National Championship. In her final year, she was the AIAW Regional and National all-around champion, Broderick Award Winner for Gymnastics and Gym-Kim Gymnast of the Year for the most outstanding woman collegiate gymnast. Besides excelling in gymnastics, Casey was a 4.0 student at SMS.
