A native of Tulsa, OK, Lowery competed primarily in the 158 and 167-pound weight classes for SMS. Lowery was the SMS Most Valuable Wrestler as a freshman, sophomore and junior, and served as a team captain his senior season as the Bears won SMSU’s only MIAA championship in what was the Bears’ final year in that conference. Lowery had a 17-8 record as a freshman and won the 158-pound weight class in the MIAA meet. His sophomore season, Lowery set new SMS marks with 28 wins and 93 team points and finished third in the MIAA. As a junior, he raised the SMS season standards once again with a 41-10 record and 170 team points. Lowery was third in the MIAA and finished sixth in the NCAA Division II meet to become the Bears’ third wrestling All-American. As a senior in 1980-81, Lowery led SMS in wins and points again on the MIAA title team with a 24-10 mark and 106 team points, and won the MIAA title at 158 pounds.
