Ralph Colby

One of the more versatile performers for the SMS Bears on the gridiron during the seasons of the early 1950’s, Ralph Colby was a three-year letterman for SMS in 1952, 1953, and 1954, playing one season for Coach Fred Thomsen and his final two years for Coach Bill Dellastatious.  A native of Warren, AK, Colby served three years with the United States Navy and attended Little Rock Junior College before coming to SMS.  He started at left halfback for the Bears during his sophomore year, played both halfback and fullback as a junior, and spent his senior year at an end position.  He was selected to the MIAA all-conference honorable mention list each of his last two seasons and joined Robert Jennings as a co-captain for the 1954 SMS squad.  He also doubled as a punter for the Bruins and highlights for his career included a 54-yard touchdown reception against Eastern New Mexico his junior year and a pair of halfback option scoring passes to Bob Victor the same season.
