Missouri State Finalizes Plans for Hall of Fame Weekend Events

Jan. 2, 2013

SPRINGFIELD -- A number of events and special recognition ceremonies have been finalized at Missouri State University as part of Athletics Hall of Fame Weekend, Feb. 1-3.

The weekend will center around the induction of eight new members of the Athletics Hall of Fame -- Mike McCarty, Jim Wright, Matt Caution, Suzy Fortune, Cheasa Gibson, Jason Hart, Kari Koch and Tracy Partain. The eight-member class will bring the total membership in the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame to 347.

The new inductees will be enshrined at a brunch ceremony on Saturday, Feb.2, at 11 a.m., in the Plaster Student Union West Ballroom. Inductees will also be recognized during halftime ceremonies in that weekend's Missouri State basketball games in JQH Arena. The Lady Bears will host Indiana State Friday, Feb. 1, at 7:05 p.m., and the Bears will meet Evansville Saturday, Feb. 2, at 2:05 p.m.

Additional activities planned for the weekend will help round out a full slate of recognition events.

Dr. Mary Jo Wynn, long-time coach, administrator and director of women's athletics at MSU, will be recognized at halftime of the games on Feb. 1 and 2. Her contributions and leadership in the construction of the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Academic Achievement Center project will be acknowledged by the Missouri State administration at that time. Thanks to Wynn's leadership efforts in making the facility in Forsythe Athletics Center a reality, renovations to the existing facility will get underway this spring. The $500,000 project will help modernize and enhance the Achievement Center for Intercollegiate Athletics, ensuring Missouri State student-athletes a top-flight study, support and academic success on-campus facility.

On Feb. 3, the Lady Bears take on Illinois State at 2:05 p.m., as part of another special day. Legendary women's basketball coach Cheryl Burnett, who accumulated 319 wins in 15 years at the helm of the program from 1987-2002, will have a ceremonial jersey retired in her honor during halftime ceremonies. Burnett led the Lady Bears to NCAA Final Four appearances in 1992 and 2001, with 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, nine regular-season conference championships and six conference tournament titles. She will become the fourth Lady Bears' legend to have her jersey retired.

Appropriately enough, Feb. 3 is also women's basketball alumni day at Missouri State. The recognition will center around Coach Burnett's ceremony, but also includes a postgame reception in the PRIME Overtime Club at JQH Arena for all Lady Bears' alumni.

Finally, as part of its Title IX 40th Anniversary celebration, MSU will honor its women's athletics pioneers during a pregame recognition of the Lady Bears' Feb. 3 game.  Female student-athletes from 1950-82 will be the focal point of the University's Title IX 40th Anniversary celebration on that day. Each former female student-athlete will receive a commemorative gift for the occasion to recognize her contributions to the winning tradition of women's athletics at MSU.

The 2013 MSU Athletics Hall of Fame induction brunch is open to the public, and reservations may be made through Monday, Jan. 28, by calling Missouri State Athletics Development (417) 836-4143. Tickets are $25 per person.

Tickets for all three home games at JQH Arena that weekend are available now at MissouriStateTix.com. Tickets are also available at the Chevy Pickup Window at JQH Arena during regular box office hours, or by calling (417) 836-7678.
