The Missouri State women’s soccer team defeated Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Plaster Field in Springfield, Mo. Winning four consecutive matches, the victory improves Missouri State’s overall record to 7-3-1 on the season.
Junior forward Jenna Laughlin scored her third goal of the season off a pass from freshman Jennifer Hamlin. Hamlin’s pass set up Laughlin one on one with Cougars’ keeper Kaci Backs where she was able to net the goal and put the Bears up 1-0 on the scoreboard.
Christine Cross netted the second goal of the match and her first on the season at the 37:56 minute mark to put the Bears up 2-0. Cross sent a shot from 15 yards out into the left side of the net that rolled in for the goal. Midfielder Samantha Aguilar was credited with the assist.
Freshman Kelsey Finders netted the final goal of the match in the 86th minute securing the win for the Bears. Finders received a pass from Aguilar, dribbled down the middle of the field and sent a shot into the back of the net past SIU-E’s goalie Backs.
Senior goalie Jackie Jasper earned another shutout victory, her seventh of the season, posting three saves between the pipes.
The Bears played a strong offensive game recording 15 shots in the contest to SIU-E’s eight. Laughlin led the Bears in shots posting four, with one on goal.
The Bears will open Missouri Valley Conference play next weekend when they host the University of Evansville on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 1:00 p.m.
