Six Total Baseball Bears Selected as MLB Draft Concludes

The 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft concluded Thursday and MSU junior catcher Dallas Hord was the lone Bear picked in the final day, going to Florida in the 32nd round. In all, six players on the 2009 roster were chosen. A complete list along with their season and career accomplishments is below.

Ben Carlson • 6th round • 185th overall pick • Cleveland Indians
• Junior OF from Topeka, Kan.
• 2009 stats: .301, 16 HR, 51 RBIs, .444 on-base %, .645 slugging %
• Career stats: .326, 38 HR, 140 RBIs, .437 on-base %, .611 slugging %
• 2008 ABCA First-Team All-American
• 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team
• 2008 and 2009 first-team all-MVC
• Seventh in MSU history with 38 home runs. School record holder with 41 career hit by pitch.

Buddy Baumann • 7th round • 212th overall pick • Kansas City Royals
• Junior LHP from Rogersville, Mo.
• 2009 stats: 11-1, 3.23 ERA, 86.1 IP, 101 Ks, .220 opponent average
• Career stats: 18-8, 4.08 ERA, 200.2 IP, 215 Ks, .237 opponent average
• 2009 MVC Pitcher of the Year
• 2009 Collegiate Baseball All-America Second Team
• 2009 NCBWA All-America Third Team   
• 2009 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team
• 2009 totals of 11 wins and 101 strikeouts rank second and fifth in MSU history, respectively. Eighth in school history with 215 career strikeouts.

Brayden Drake • 12th round • 354th overall pick • San Diego Padres
• Senior 3B from Webb City, Mo.
• 2009 stats: .414, 10 HR, 54 RBIs, .485 on-base %, .670 slugging %
• Career stats: .328, 28 HR, 176 RBIs, .390 on-base %, .528 slugging %
• 2009 MVC Player of the Year
• 2009 Collegiate Baseball All-America Third Team
• Missouri State record holder with 30-game hitting streak and 67 career doubles
• Ranks in MSU career top 10 in doubles, RBIs, hits, hit by pitch, at bats, games played, extra base hits and total bases

Aaron Meade • 28th round • 855th overall pick • New York Yankees
• Sophomore LHP from Kansas City, Mo.
• Draft-eligible sophomore because he is 21 years old
• 2009 stats: 9-2, 3.39 ERA, 90.1 IP, 89 Ks, .232 opponent average
• Career stats: 13-5, 4.05 ERA, 149.0 IP, 154 Ks, .243 opponent average
• 2009 first-team all-MVC

Tim Clubb • 29th round • 890th overall pick • Chicago Cubs
• Junior RHP from Eureka, Mo.
• 2009 stats: 4-5, 5.11 ERA, 88.0 IP, 74 Ks, .284 opponent average
• Career stats: 21-8, 3.82 ERA, 278.0 IP, 200 Ks, .262 opponent average
• 2008 MVC Pitcher of the Year

• Holds school record for most wins without a loss, going 11-0 in 2008
• Ranks third in school history in innings pitched, fifth in wins and sixth in starts

Dallas Hord • 32nd round • 968th overall pick • Florida Marlins
• Junior C from Ozark, Mo.
• 2009 stats: .347, 8 HR, 37 RBIs, .410 on-base %, .556 slugging %, 11-13 SB
• Career stats: .290, 12 HR, 61 RBIs, .367 on-base %, .452 slugging %, 18-21 SB
• 2009 first-team all-MVC 

Professional clubs must sign drafted players by August 15 or the rights to that player are lost and they can reenter the draft in 2010. Underclassmen have the option to return to Missouri State.

A trio of Bears baseball signees heard their names called on Wednesday. Bubby Williams (C, Crowder College) was taken by Houston in the 11th round, Pierce Johnson (RHP, Faith Christian Academy, Arvada, Colo.) was chosen by Tampa Bay in the 15th round, and Beau Stoker (INF, Bishop Ward HS, Kansas City, Mo.) was picked by Minnesota in the 18th round. Bears basketball recruit Lane Adams (CF, Red Oak, Okla.), was a 13th round choice by Kansas City.
